The Role of Light and Space in Emotional Priming

Steven Holl Architects, in collaboration with Marcela Steinbachová and SKUPINA Studio, won the international competition for the Terezín Ghetto Museum in the Czech Republic. Terezín, founded in 1780 as a military fortress, became a Jewish ghetto during World War II, where approximately 33,000 people died. The new project will serve as a memorial of hope and light.

The Space of Light, a contemplative addition, refracts natural light into a spectrum of colors, symbolizing humanity. At night, it glows like a beacon in the darkness. The work recalls Moon Landscape, a drawing by Petr Ginz, who was deported to Terezín and later killed in Auschwitz at the age of 16.

The project also includes the renovation of the existing museum, new green spaces, an information center, and updated parking facilities.
